"The closer to God you draw, the greater will be your disdain for sin." Dr. Richard Blackaby It's easy to play the excuses game and feel justified in sin, especially for a minor sin. "I'm not harming anyone, right?" How about the comparison game? "My sin isn't as bad as ____________. At least I've never __________. " What I'm actually doing is viewing sin from my perspective or that of the world, and, over time, I lose my disdain for casual sin and risk slipping deeper -- sin is never satisfied with small.   The danger: the farther away from God we slip, the easier it is to view Him as the problem, and we start to feel guilty for upholding His standard.   And, yeah, God's standard is high, but He bridged that gap to make sure ALL are without excuse. (Romans 3:23 and 6:23) Jesus paid for ALL sin -- big and small -- and the...

“You come to the help of those who gladly do right, who remember your ways. But when we continued to sin against them, you were angry. How then can we be saved? All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind, our sins sweep us away.” Isaiah 64:5-6   It is my opinion that one of the worst smells ever is the stagnant stench of a dirty, moist, on the verge of mold dish rag. But that’s exactly what Isaiah is saying.   What could cause such a thing to happen?  Sin.   Sin spoils, rots, decays- taints even our best efforts.   “How then can we be saved?” Isaiah...

This time of year, it is easy to think about those less fortunate and have fallen on hard times.  There is more focus on food pantries, Angel Trees, and shelters as the temperatures drop and the push for Christmas gifts hits full tilt, which is all good stuff! We definitely should keep these things in mind all year round.  But, I don't want to talk about the Matthew 25 type of "least of these." I'd like to talk about the Luke 2, "least of these." The Shepherds. These guys are the lowly rabble in Biblical culture, yet God chose them, gave them a special Herald Dispatch announcement, if you will, to tell them that His Son was here. His promise was on track for fulfillment.  Why the Shepherd?  I think it's because they would listen, for one. They weren't so caught up in social status or even social etiquette, for that matter, that they'd miss...
